RAC Intellibus driverless shuttle connects with Geraldton
The award-winning RAC WA Intellibus, a Navya Arma level 4 High Automation vehicle, has completed its eight-month trial in Busselton, and it has now connected with its next West Australian regional town, Geraldton.
Just as in Busselton, the Intellibus will be open for members of the public to take a driverless ride in the shuttle. It will operate on a 2.8 kilometre route along the foreshore, from the Intellibus Hub near Stow Gardens, along to the Batavia Coast Marina, and back.
‘We’re excited to bring the RAC Intellibus to this part of Western Australia and provide an opportunity for more members of our community to see and experience driverless vehicle technology for themselves,’ said Anne Still, RAC General Manager Public Policy and Mobility.
‘This is a significant milestone, as we explore how driverless technology could help us address the unique road safety and transport challenges we face in regional WA.
“Human error is the cause of the vast majority of road deaths and if we can help WA safely transition to driverless vehicles sooner, countless lives could be saved and thousands of serious injuries prevented.’
‘After a hugely successful demonstration in Busselton last year, we’re looking forward to seeing the RAC Intellibus in another regional setting – which will be critical in helping to prepare Australia for a more connected and driverless future.’
How to book
The Geraldton public trial began on 16 September, and will run through to 8 November. The shuttle will run every 30 minutes, Wednesday to Sunday, 9.30am—12.00pm and then again from 1.00pm—3.00pm. Anyone over the age of 7 can take a ride. Bookings are open now, and (free!) tickets can be booked at the RAC Geraldton Intellibus Demo page.
Intellibus for school students
Additionally, on Tuesdays to Fridays, from 17 November to 11 December the RAC is running its Imagine Program™. This program is for year 5 and 6 school students to ‘… learn about the changing nature of transport, mobility and road safety, whilst addressing aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) and HASS subjects (Humanities and Social Sciences).’
School may register their interest at the RAC Imagine Program web page. For more information on this program, here’s a short video:
