RAC Intellibus wins another award
The Royal Automobile Club of WA’s Intellibus driverless shuttle was presented with an award at last week’s Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management (AIPTM) Excellence Awards 2018 Gala Dinner.
Awards were handed out across five categories:
- Traffic Engineering/Management & Road Safety
- Transport Planning
- Transport and Land Use Modelling
- Road Safety
- Traffic Data
The RAC Automated Vehicle Program – Intellibus Trial won the Janet Brash Memorial Award, for excellence in all five of the categories. The award was accepted by Anne Still, RAC’s General Manager, Public Policy.
This recognition for the trial is on the heels of receiving a Special Mention from the International Transport Forum in May 2018.
About the Intellibus
The Intellibus is a Navya Arma level 4 High Automation vehicle. The public trial of the driverless shuttle began on 31 August 2016.
The shuttle’s 3.5 km journey begins at the RAC Intellibus Hub, then along the South Perth Esplanade, lastly heading west to the Old Mill.
The aims of the trial are to:
- Increase understanding about the potential impacts and opportunities from the advent of AV technology
- Give members of the public the chance to see AV technology, and eventually use
and experience it - Further help WA and Australia prepare a roadmap for changes to support and safely transition to AV technology.
In its first year 14,650 people booked a ride on the Intellibus driverless shuttle, amounting to more than 3,900 thirty-minute rides.
Bookings for a ride open to anyone over 7 years of age, and can be made via the RAC’s Intellibus website.
