Australia finally has an electric vehicle strategy. How does it stack up?
Professor Hussein Dia of the Swinburne University of Technology has taken a look a the recently-released National Electric Vehicle Strategy, and submits it to a few strong questions. Does it live up to these expectations? Is it ambitious enough to meet our emission-reduction targets and international commitments? And how far does it go to align Australia with world-best practice for the transition to electric vehicles?

In the first three months of this year electric vehicle sales in Queensland increased by almost 80%, and the state is doing its best to increase those numbers with its Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate Scheme, offering a rebate of up to $6,000.

“Electric vehicle drivers will get a boost from another 117 fast-charging locations along major Australian highways over the next two years in a $78.6 million deal designed to address “known black spots”.”

Associated with the increasing shift to electric vehicles is the pressing need to clean up the non-electric vehicle situation in Australia. In short we badly need new laws to cut transport pollution and bring more efficient vehicles into the country.
