C-ITS for motorcycle safety: Project outcomes webinar

On Wednesday 29 April we held the latest in our series of project outcome webinars, C-ITS for motorcycle safety, a recently complated award-winning R&D project. The webinar was recorded, and the video is embedded in the page below.
Background
Motorcycle riders continue to be over‑represented in road fatalities and serious injuries, both in frequency and severity, compared with other transport modes. Too many rider lives are still lost in crashes that could be prevented.
While Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C‑ITS) have come a long way, important questions remain, for instance how these systems will work for motorcycle riders.
La Trobe University, in partnership with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Transport Accident Commission, has been investigating how connected vehicle technologies can improve motorcycle safety in real‑world riding conditions.
This webinar presents findings from the award‑winning Motorcyclist safety: Connected motorcycle pilot, delivered through iMOVE Australia. The project applies emerging C‑ITS technologies to connect motorcycle riders with infrastructure and other road users to improve rider awareness of critical safety risks, especially in situations where hazards are hidden or difficult to anticipate. It was a global first to conduct tests with hundreds of regular riders using simulation and controlled off‑road trials, assessing performance, safety impact and rider perceptions. It also engaged closely with industry through the Connected Motorcycle Consortium.
The project examined:
- how connected data can integrate with existing systems;
- how warnings should be delivered through a desirable, safe and usable human–machine interface (HMI);
- how rider acceptance and trust can be built through co design and testing with riders; and
- crucially: does it make riders safer?
The webinar will share evidence‑based insights and practical recommendations for industry and government, helping shape connected transport systems that genuinely work for motorcycle riders.
