Future transport roadmap: Tech and infrastructure requirements

This project will deliver a national roadmap of technology and infrastructure requirements for future transport systems including Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).
The roadmap will provide practical guidance for future research, policy and investment. While a key focus is on technological needs including digital, connectivity and automation, the roadmap will also reflect the evolving political, economic, social, environmental and legal contexts influencing new technology use including CAVs.
It will also articulate feasible pathways for advancing future transport technologies across four domains of safety, productivity, accessibility and sustainability outcomes.
The roadmap aims to support public and private sector decision-makers in planning, prioritisation and coordination of future transport technology initiatives.

Project background
The Future Transport Roadmap draws on more than a decade of research, policy development and pilot activity focused on the evolution of Australia’s transport systems.
When iMOVE was established, early expectations for CAVs and related technologies were largely informed by technology-led assumptions about rapid adoption and transformational change. Experience since that time, both in Australia and internationally, has demonstrated that progress in future transport systems is shaped by a complex interaction of technological capability and non-technology factors. This includes regulatory settings, institutional readiness, economic conditions, social acceptance and environmental considerations.
This project responds to iMOVE Commonwealth Milestone 1.3.05 by applying a research-led approach to the development of a revised roadmap for future transport networks. The research will consolidate and build on iMOVE’s existing body of work, alongside broader policy, regulatory and technology developments, to embed knowledge gained to date and identify preferred directions for future research and investment. Within this broader systems context, CAVs are considered as a key enabling component of future transport networks rather than a standalone outcome.
The roadmap will be informed by evidence drawn from a literature review, targeted input from industry leaders, and comparative interjurisdictional and international case studies. t will reflect the current operating context of Australia’s transport sector and support public and private sector stakeholders to deliver improved outcomes across safety, productivity, accessibility and sustainability.
The roadmap is intended to support and propose direction for planning, prioritisation and coordination of research and innovation activities, rather than prescribe specific delivery actions, and provide a robust, evidence-informed foundation for subsequent decision-making
Project objectives
Determine the directions along which the transport sector should advance in order to maximise its delivery of safety, productivity, accessibility, and sustainability.
